When I go to work, I can’t use the bicycle lanes because they are on the sidewalks, and the sidewalk is used by pedestrians (like Dann said). I hope that there will be better planning for the new lanes, otherwise it will be a waste of money.

Last summer I came by bike to Romania from the Netherlands, and I noticed that many people use the bike in the country side in Banat, Oltenia and Muntenia. But the thing I want to point out is that nobody had a fancy mountain bike. Just the classic country side-bike, the heavy bike with big wheels and no gears. You know the bike that our grandparents used to have. Why don’t I see those in the centre of Bucharest, because those bikes are perfect for the city. They are strong and don’t have a lot of things on them, that can break. A simple and easy to repair bike, without gears. The city is flat anyway.

To me it seems that many people don’t have a bike because they are ridiculously expensive (600 to 1500 lei), and not because there aren’t any bicycle lanes. I have seen these bikes change hands for 200 lei maximum.
Instead of waiting for people to get civilized, we should get them interested in biking by offering cheap bikes, somehow. This in combination with bicycle lanes will have enormous positive change for the city in every aspect.
